Rescue Mission Is Called Off For NASA’s Aging Swift Space Telescope

NASA has called off a $30 million mission to rescue its aging Swift space telescope after Katalyst Space’s Link spacecraft developed persistent control and positioning problems. The Associated Press reports:
Katalyst said Link will not attempt to capture Swift and boost it to a higher orbit because of problems with controlling the spacecraft. NASA said this means the telescope will plunge through the atmosphere after more than 20 years of tracking some of the biggest explosions in the universe like gamma ray bursts and exploding stars. Its demise is not expected before October.

NASA paid $30 million to Katalyst in an attempt to raise the telescope to a safer, longer-lasting orbit. Intense solar activity caused it to lose altitude faster than expected. The rescue spacecraft went into an uncontrollable spin a few weeks after its liftoff in early July. While flight controllers managed to slow Link’s tumble, issues continued to plague its pointing and positioning in orbit.

“This is not the outcome we were working toward, but it does not change why this mission was worth attempting,” NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman said in a statement. As a consolation prize, Katalyst will continue to operate Link in proximity with the telescope to demonstrate capabilities for future rescue operations. Katalyst CEO Ghonhee Lee said it was an ambitious mission on an aggressive timeline that was thrown together in under a year. “We took on this high-risk, high-reward challenge and are proud of the milestones we reached along the way,” Lee said in a statement. “We have already learned a tremendous amount.”

Meta was infused with a culture in which employees obsessed over user numbers and consistently pushed safety to the side, according to Arturo Bejar, a former employee turned whistleblower, who testified today in the landmark child safety trial against the social media company. Only one man had the ability to change that, Bejar said: CEO Mark Zuckerberg. But he didn’t. “At the end of the day, it was the company culture that Mark had created that made it so that it was practically impossible to deliver features that addressed the wellbeing and safety issues that we’ve been talking about,” he said.

Bejar is a linchpin witness for a consortium of states led by California, Colorado, Kentucky and New Jersey that sued Meta, alleging violations of consumer and child data protection laws, and that the company lied to the public about risks its platforms posed. The attorneys for the states say Meta designed Facebook and Instagram to hook young users and to keep them on site longer thanks to features such as infinite scrolling and the “like” button. Meta has denied the allegations. In his opening statement on Tuesday, attorney Paul Schmidt argued that the company was sensitive to the risks to teens, sought to address them and did not deceive the public about them. The state attorneys have not yet said if they will call Zuckerberg as a witness.

Testifying in federal court in Oakland, California, for a second day on Wednesday, Bejar, who worked on safety issues at Meta for eight years, said he interacted with Zuckerberg dozens of times, and charged that Zuckerberg was not telling the truth when he made public denials that the company put profits over safety. In particular, Bejar addressed a widely-shared Facebook post Zuckerberg made in 2021 after another whistleblower, Frances Haugen, shared internal documents with The Wall Street Journal that highlighted risks to the mental health of teens. In the post, Zuckerberg said it’s “just not true” that Meta prioritizes profit over safety and wellbeing. “Based on my experience at Meta, that is not an accurate statement,” Bejar said. […] Bejar testified, at almost every turn the company chose policies that boosted usership and revenue over safety. Safety was “not a meaningful priority,” he said.

PINE64 Halts Linux Device Production Amid DRAM and EMMC Shortages

PINE64 has some very bad news for Linux hardware fans. PINE64 says it has no plans to produce additional Linux devices in the near future because of the ongoing DRAM and eMMC shortage. Future production will depend on component pricing after mid 2027, while existing PineNote and PineTab2 inventory could run out in roughly three months. The company says PineTime, PineVoice, and Pinecil production will continue as usual, but the outlook for its Linux hardware is much less certain.
“That’s it for this post, all in all it’s a bit bleak for the Linux devices, but in the meantime PineStore still have a great lineup of MCU powered devices which will continue to expand with more exciting devices,” the company said.

Apple is testing supply from an up-and-coming DRAM supplier in China. Hynix is working on converting old fabs into a smaller process to create more fast RAM. TSMC is building a fab in Arizona. Samsung is opening a fab in Texas next year.

I bought a MiniPC from China instead, a GMKtec M5 Plus with 5825U, 32GB DDR4 and a 1TB NVMe SSD — for $295 right before everything went to shit. That one is out of production, but an equivalent machine is now $600. I’ve had it for over a year now with literally no problems.

The memory is 3.2 GHz, and despite being so cheap it doesn’t even report a manufacturer, there doesn’t seem to be anything wrong with it. It’s got wifi 6 (MT7922) and dual 2.5 GbE (RTL8125) and the only thing that requires even a vaguely recent kernel is the wifi. It came with Windows, and I even shrank that just in case I’m ever desperate for a real Windows machine to flash some firmware or something, but ofc I’ve never needed or wanted to.

Too bad the combination of AI bullshit and tariff fuckery has doubled the price, I’d buy another similar machine.

PINE64 products are not that great

I had a Pinebook PRO and it was… meh. Way too slow and underpowered for modern web browsing. Also shipped with Manjaro, but I’m a Debian fan. I installed Armbian instead; PINE64 doesn’t offer much in the way of hardware documentation and so I spent a fair bit of time getting Armbian to work. I had to munge the device tree files based on the ones in Manjaro. I ended up selling the laptop.

In retrospect, I probably should have hung on to it. I could probably sell it for more now!

Stripe Buys AI Startup OpenRouter For $7.5 Billion

Stripe is acquiring AI model marketplace OpenRouter as it pushes beyond payments into the infrastructure behind AI applications. According to The New York Times, the deal is reportedly valued at about $7.5 billion, with $1.5 billion allocated to OpenRouter’s founders. Less than three months ago the company was valued at about $1.3 billion. CNBC reports:
OpenRouter has become popular with developers seeking to use AI models, particularly those considered non-proprietary and available for free. Many of these so-called open-weight AI models stem from Chinese labs like DeepSeek and Z.ai, which have gained steam among developers for generally being more cost-efficient relative to proprietary AI models from U.S. companies like OpenAI and Anthropic.

In a blog post about the deal, Stripe noted that it’s been working with companies to “optimize their token costs and route tokens efficiently,” referring to a kind of metric used to measure AI model usage. Stripe said it’s difficult to manage AI costs relative to performance because of the rapid “pace at which models are released and repriced.” […]

OpenRouter said in a blog post that combining with Stripe will help with its overall vision of “a healthy AI ecosystem where many models thrive, where AI neurodiversity is a strength, where a lab or an inference provider with a breakthrough can reach millions of developers, and where no single model becomes the default by inertia.”
“Stripe is building the economic infrastructure for AI, and together with OpenRouter we’ll help businesses maximize profitability by routing their requests intelligently and spending their tokens efficiently,” Stripe CEO Patrick Collison said in a statement.

I have a couple of projects that need raw access to an appropriate AI model and OpenRouter can get that for you. And they do make it very convenient. You put some cash in your account with them and use their API to get access to whichever model you happen to choose at the time. It shows the prices clearly, so you can experiment to find one that works well for your purposes and is as inexpensive as possible. I didn’t bother to write the code that interfaces with OpenRouter of course, I used AI for that.

I am frankly amazed at the $billions that were spent to buy this thing. It’s really just a router for AI prompts and a convenient way to pay for the service, and they take a little cream off the top like a credit card agency. But I guess this is what attracted Stripe, which acts as a payment intermediary for all kinds of things. Stripe probably had very little expertise in the AI arena and this was an easy though expensive way in to the modern paradigm of paying for AI as a commodity.

Amazon’s Drones Will Soon Deliver to Nearly 500 US Cities and Towns

Amazon says its Prime Air drone delivery service will expand sixfold to nearly 500 U.S. cities and towns by the end of 2026, including metro areas around Chicago, Syracuse, Cleveland, Atlanta, and Boise. According to Amazon Prime Air vice president David Carbon, the service has already delivered “hundreds of thousands of packages to customers” this year, typically within about an hour. The Verge reports:
These will join 11 locations across the US where Amazon already offers drone deliveries, with each Prime Air site serving an area of approximately 175 square miles. The service aims to quickly deliver packages of up to 5 pounds or less […]. Amazon reiterated its drone safety features alongside these expansion plans, including Prime Air’s “industry-leading Detect-and-Avoid system.” That’s likely an attempt to minimize any concerns raised by the communities where the service is expanding, given these drones have already been scrutinized for crashing into cranes, internet cables, gardens, and an apartment building.

When companies throw around terms like “cities and towns” for drone logistics, they are usually talking about sprawling suburban developments with neat, wide-open lawns, not dense urban cores.

Even with this big rollout targeting nearly 500 communities, the operational reality dictates where these things can actually land:

Amazon isn’t building 500 new drone stations; they are counting every municipality touched by a regional network.

A single facility covers a massive swath of territory (roughly 175 square miles), which inevitably zeroes in on the suburbs and outer rings of places like Atlanta, Chicago, and Dallas rather than downtown high-rises.

The Landing Zone Problem: For a drone to safely drop a package (even a modest 5-pound shoebox-sized item), it needs a clear, unobstructed patch of ground free of overhead power lines, tight balconies, narrow alleyways, and inquisitive pets.

Try finding a reliable 2-meter drop zone in a dense neighborhood.
Not to mention it being a porch-pirate’s wet dream.

the same but what caught my eye was “will make 1 million drone deliveries this year.” https://www.cnbc.com/2026/08/1… Well that sounds great, except even at 10 bucks/delivery that is only 10M/year. Which seems pretty low for a project that has cost this much. And is 1M deliveries even a blip on their daily deliveries? I could believe they deliver 10M pkgs per day and this is 1M pkgs per year.

Well, yeah, but those are still cities. Almost twice as many people live in parts of cities that are not “dense urban cores”.

And the dense areas involve apartment complexes with hundreds or thousands of units and interior halls, so they’re not delivering one package to the building; they’re delivering a hundred. It wouldn’t make sense to send drones for that.

But if you can handle the suburban sprawl with drones, that’s a huge logistics win, because that’s where all the time is spent — not by somebody going to an urban-core building and dropping a hundred packages in the mail room, but by somebody going to a hundred individual houses and dropping off a hundred packages one at a time.

Music Publisher Round Hill Files $1 Billion Copyright Infringement Suits Against Suno, Anthropic

Independent music publisher Round Hill is suing Suno and Anthropic for allegedly using hundreds of copyrighted songs without permission to train their AI systems. The company says potential damages could exceed $1 billion, arguing there is “nothing fair” about building multibillion-dollar AI businesses on copyrighted material while rights holders receive nothing. From The Hollywood Reporter:
Round Hill is a prominent music publisher whose copyrights include the Goo Goo Dolls’ “Iris,” Bonnie Tyler’s “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” the Kinks’ “Lola” and Dio’s “Holy Diver.” The company provided a list of 500 songs that the defendants had infringed upon. Round Hill said in the suits that the company plans to “amend to list potentially ten thousand or more of their musical compositions,” with those damages potentially exceeding $1 billion. “While in other cases for copyright infringement, Defendant has waxed poetic about the necessity of progress and AI’s value to society, there is simply no reason — other than rote expediency — to have that progress come at the cost of copyrights holders,” prominent music attorney Richard Busch, representing Round Hill, wrote in the suits.

Round Hill further argued that the latter "‘expediency’ arguments completely falter” when taking into account Suno and Anthropic’s significant cash valuations they’ve earned while “exploiting illicit copies of copyrighted works, including the Round Hill Works.” “There is simply nothing fair about a company using theft to build for purely commercial purposes a multi-billion dollar business while those from which they steal receive nothing,” Round Hill said.
Suno also faces a lawsuit from Universal Music Group and Sony Music Group.

That distinction is a recent invention. Copyright originally came about as a response to the invention of the printing press, and the subsequent publishing (for sale) of books without compensation to the authors. It was expressly about distribution for profit.

Fair use is their only defence in the US.

When we in the US created our copyright laws, we expressly stated the purpose as “to promote the progress of science, art, and useful knowledge.” Building on what was done before was the core of US copyright law. …which is where the idea of “fair use” comes from.

CISA: Medusa Ransomware Hit Over 500 Critical Infrastructure Orgs

CISA says the Medusa ransomware operation has breached more than 500 U.S. critical infrastructure organizations since 2021, up from more than 300 reported last year. The group has targeted healthcare, government, defense, manufacturing, IT and financial organizations, evolving into a ransomware-as-a-service operation that recruits initial-access brokers and uses stolen data to pressure victims into paying. BleepingComputer reports:
The three federal agencies recommended that network defenders secure their networks against the ransomware group’s attacks by mitigating security vulnerabilities to protect operating systems, software, and firmware from exploitation attempts. Security teams are also advised to segment networks to block lateral movement after compromise and to block access from untrusted origins to remote services on internal systems.

[…] “Medusa developers typically recruit initial access brokers (IABs) in cybercriminal forums and marketplaces to obtain initial access to potential victims,” the advisory says. “Potential payments between $100 USD and $1 million USD are offered to these affiliates with the opportunity to work exclusively for Medusa.”

Moderna, Merck Say mRNA Vaccine Prevents Melanoma From Returning

Moderna and Merck say their personalized mRNA melanoma vaccine significantly reduced both cancer recurrence and spread in a late-stage trial. The treatment could reach patients as soon as next year if regulators approve it. Reuters reports:
Moderna developed the vaccine with Merck and tested it together with immunotherapy drug Keytruda, a widely used treatment for melanoma. […] This is the first positive late-stage trial result for an mRNA cancer vaccine, which trains a patient’s immune system to fight tumors by targeting specific mutations in those cells and the first such study to show that adding a treatment to Keytruda worked better than that therapy alone. Similar approaches are being tested against lung, breast and pancreatic cancers.

[…] The cancer treatment combines Merck’s Keytruda with a made-to-order mRNA vaccine from Moderna that is based on an analysis of mutations found in the patients’ own tumors. The trial enrolled 1,137 high-risk patients with stage IIB-IV melanoma that had been surgically removed. Volunteers were randomized to receive up to nine doses of Keytruda plus the personalized vaccine or Keytruda alone for about one year. The companies said no new safety signals have emerged in the trial. In January, the companies announced results of a mid-stage trial of the treatment showing that it reduced the risk of recurrence or death by 49% after five years.
Karen Knudsen, CEO of the Parker Institute for Cancer Immunotherapy, said the Moderna results could signal a new era for treating solid-tumor cancers. “The positive hit here leads us into truly this next phase in immunotherapy,” Knudsen said. “This is an auspicious start — this is where things begin.”
Moderna shares more than doubled on the news, adding about $30 billion to its market value.

If this works well, similar methods will likely work for other cancers also. Unfortunately, since it requires an individual design for a specific person, it likely is going to not benefit much from economies of scale, so it may remain very expensive. Also, given that it uses mRNA, it is likely that parts of the US right will either refuse to use it or will try to block it. Given RFK Jr. being in the Secretary of Health, what should be a slam dunk may end up becoming an uphill battle. On the bright side, some of the anti-vaxxers seem to be ok with mRNA systems once someone already has a disease.

This is why a lot of chronic diseases will NEVER have cures. It’s more profitable to treat than to cure. Treat someone over a lifetime and milk 100k out of them. Treat someone once and present them with a 100k price tag to pay all at once and the consumer or insurance company will balk at the cost.

It’s a fun conspiracy theory, but this is actually just how biology works.

There’s basically four kinds of things that can go wrong with our bodies. Infections, mechanical issues, system errors, and cancer.

Infections we can cure by helping the body to kill off the infection, it’s only some rare stubborn ones like AIDS that are chronic like you describe.

Mechanical issues we can fix with surgery.

System errors? That’s stuff like genetic disorders where our body creates too much of hormone A or doesn’t create the proper form of protein B. The problem is in our DNA and you can’t cure it without rewriting our DNA (which we’re getting to).

And then there’s cancers, which are similar to infections, where we try to kill it (as they’re doing here), though weirdly, some research suggests treating it as a chronic issue might be better for the patients.

In either case, it’s not the fact that pharma is deciding "don’t make a pill to cure it, just find a lifetime treatment!". It’s only in the past few years that we’re reaching the point where we can actually cure things that were traditionally chronic.

I don’t think that’s correct? Possibly I’m misreading this, but it looks like the study involved giving two things, both the Keytruda, and a separate personalized vaccine.

You’re not misreading it. It is individualized. Different cancers express different antigens, and the mRNA vaccine needs to construct something that expresses those same antigens to train the immune system to attack them.

The nice thing about mRNA, is that it is potentially relatively cheap to synthesize mRNA strands and replicate them. It won’t be hundreds of dollars, but it won’t be millions, either. Right now, I think it’s hundreds of thousands per patient, but that will go down over time as they streamline the process of taking a sample of the tumor and determining an mRNA gene sequence that matches said cancer. And economies of scale on the equipment will also probably help.

It may also be the case that it becomes less individualized over time. At some point, we might reach the point where they have a bunch of pre-sequenced antigens that are all ready to go, and someone just keys in a list of antigens, and a piece of software spits out the mRNA sequence. At that point, it is still individualized, but with a much, much more streamlined process for generating it.

Note that I don’t work in this field, so take all of this as the opinion of an educated layperson observer. :-)

X’s algorithm learns what you hate and shows you more of it, according to a new study just published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS). The paper, titled Value misalignment of X’s feed algorithm is a reflection of value tensions in engagement, found that the site’s algorithm prioritized engagement above all else when it generated a user’s For You Page. It also showed that X serves more ragebait to people who say they are Democrats, although the exact reason for that is unclear.
“In 2026 that’s maybe not the most surprising headline ever,” Ziv Epstein, a postdoctoral researcher at Stanford University, and co-author of the paper, told 404 Media. “So we actually dug in a little deeper to figure out why this is actually happening, and it turns out that X’s feed algorithm, like a lot of these social media algorithms, is optimized for engagement [but] it turns out that not all types of engagement are considered equally.”
The researchers found that X’s algorithm can push users toward content that conflicts with their stated values, especially when they reply to posts that anger or provoke them. Although replies accounted for just 6.8% of interactions, they appeared to carry disproportionate weight: “It’s this feedback loop of outrage baiting. The algorithm learns that you get outraged and then continues to serve more content in that direction,” said Epstein.

It’s unclear why X seems to serve ragebait to Democrats more often than Republicans. 404 Media speculates that it may be because there’s more rightwing content on X overall or that Democrats tend to engage with posts they disagree with more often. “There might be some kind of differential effects on information diets there, or it might be something more psychological about how different you know partisan identities are triggering different kinds of actions and reactions, but ultimately I don’t want to speculate too much,” said Epstein.

X’s former product chief Nikita Bier confirmed that the site had been set to favor replies. “This is no longer true,” Bier said in a post on X. “The largest contributor of seeing ragebait was the reply predictor and we were aware that angry replies were causing people to see more of that content. So last month, we gave the reply predictor a 15x boost if it’s a friend’s post — and it reduced ragebait by [an] order of magnitude.”

Twenty soldiers at Fort Stewart in Georgia in the Army’s 9th Brigade Engineering Battalion, part of the 3rd Infantry Division, have already chosen this incentive as part of their reenlistment, an Army spokesperson told CBS News on Wednesday. “The idea was to have a unique incentives program that connects to what Soldiers are interested in,” Lt. Col. Angel Tomko, a spokesperson for the 3rd Infantry Division, said in a statement. “The command team, in conjunction with the career counselor, wanted to get soldiers excited to reenlist.”

I mean sure, I might die in a pointless war in Iran that wouldn’t have been necessary if the same guy who started this war hadn’t ripped up the nuclear agreements we had previously with Iran the last time he was in charge, but think about getting to play a video game for FOUR WHOLE DAYS!

But in all seriousness, the main motivation for joining the military continues to be money. So I guess if they were planning to play GTA anyway, that’s like extra free money, so maybe it might tip the balance for a few people… but I doubt it will rise above the noise floor. Politics, active wars, etc. also don’t usually rise above the noise floor, surprisingly.

The only big factor in recruiting is the economy. When the job market is good, recruiting drops. When the job market stinks, recruiting increases. So if they really want to increase military recruiting, all they have to do is tank the job market further, and it will happen naturally.

It’s a statistically correct statement, at least post-1973. When asked what the main consideration for joining was, money was the top answer, and IIRC more than half gave that answer. The military is a steady job and provides other financial-adjacent benefits, such as the G.I. Bill paying for higher education. And when there aren’t so many steady jobs out there, that makes it more compelling.

Not saying it’s the only reason, just that it is one of the larger influencing factors in how well the military is able to recruit.

Chinese robotics giant Unitree surged more than 600% in its Shanghai stock market debut, marking the first mainland Chinese listing by a humanoid robot maker and a major milestone for Beijing’s robotics ambitions. The BBC reports:
Unitree, officially known as Yushu Technology Co Ltd, was founded in 2016 and now plays a key role in Beijing’s ambitions to develop advanced technology. It has become a robotics industry leader, selling devices from sensors and automated arms to four-legged and human-like machines. The firm shipped more than 5,500 humanoid robots last year as demand for the technology grows.

Unitree is one of the few companies in the sector to make money, delivering a net profit of 278 million yuan in 2025. It is a fierce rival to developers in the US as it produces robots with similar features but at lower prices. The company is based in Hangzhou, in eastern China. The region is home to a so-called golden cluster zone of robotics firms, which have benefited from huge government investments. That support helped drive a more than threefold increase in the number of Chinese robotics firms between 2020 and 2024, according to state-run China Daily.

A study of more than 64,000 people born around the end of Britain’s postwar sugar rationing found that those exposed to less sugar during their first 1,000 days had lower rates of five cancers decades later, including roughly 69% lower liver cancer risk and 36% lower breast cancer risk. They also “showed signs of slower biological aging” and “continued to consume less sugar and had healthier diets overall,” according to the authors of a new study published in The Conversation. After the second world war, sugar remained rationed in Britain for several years. But in September 1953, rationing ended and people started eating a lot more sugar. Consumption nearly doubled. This meant that children born just a few months apart had very different levels of sugar exposure both in the womb and during early childhood. For our study, we used data from over 64,000 people born in Britain between 1951 and 1956. Those born earlier spent a larger share of their first 1,000 days under sugar rationing, while those born later experienced progressively less of it.

[…] What is most surprising, however, is not the cancer results or the biological markers of ageing. It’s how early-life sugar exposure continued to affect people’s diets even 50 years later. We found that people who experienced sugar rationing early in life still consumed less sugar in adulthood, around age 50. They also ate less overall, and their diets were healthier and more diverse. This suggests that the level of sweetness people are exposed to very early in life may shape their taste preferences for a long time.

So the study does actually address that , and found that indeed people who didnt eat the sugar in those first 3 years tended to consume less later in life.

Annecdotally (which isnt evidence!) that rings true to me. My mother was pretty strict on no sugar and minimal salt (in the 1970s the thinking on salt linked it a lot closer to heart disease than current thinking does which has de-emphasized that a little), and nowdays I pretty much never put it in my food and shy away from sweet food, and use pretty minimal salt.

With all that said, the study does mention that children exposed to less sugar in early childhood appeared to have longer telemeres and that there is likely the smoking gun on the early childhood / sugar link, as theres a pretty well established link between telemere length and cancer succeptibility in late life. Essentially the telemeres are the caps on the end the genomes, and the longer they are, the better protected the ends of the genome are from copying errors. Its also closely associated with the hayflick limit (essentially how many copies a cell can make before it shits the bed).

“It suggests” if you ignore that their confounder control is terrible. First, sugar wasn’t the only restricted food in post-war Britain - there was also rationing of eggs, butter, cheese and meats that ended during the same timeperiod. So you’re not actually testing the effects of sugar consumption, now are you? Also, the early 1950s was a period of rapid change in the US, including the maturation and expansion of the NHS (founded in 1948), the introduction of new childhood vaccines, major environmental shifts (for example, the Great Smog of London in 1952 vs. the 1956 Clean Air Act). Saying “all changes = sugar” just based on birthdate seems absurd.

It’s also worth mentioning that there’s also survivorship bias - anyone who died before the study couldn’t be enrolled, and there’s also no actual linking to any maternal / childhood dietary logs. Also, the ratios of cancer differences they’re describing aren’t small, they’re massive. Are we to attribute a lung cancer difference on the order of smoking vs. nonsmoking households as being to sugar, or due to, you know, smoking (or pollution) trends not accounted for in their cohort?

(It seems likely that there’s a genetic component to the length, so if the child has longer telemeres, the parents should, too, resulting in a more sugar free home environment.)

Entangled quantum particles do not allow for faster than light communication. They allow you to be sure that once you collapse the quantum state on one end, it has been or will be the same one on the other end too. The moment you entagle two states, you know they’re the same (or “matching”, which can also mean opposite depending on the states) without actually measuring either of them (where measuring does require destroying them).

A quantum state is like a scrach lottery ticket. You don’t know if it’s gonna win on lose until you scratch it and essentially invalidate it as a “playable” lottery ticket. Quantum entanglement allows you to “clone” tickets without actually scratching them, but you won’t know if they’re winners or losers, just that they match.

Top Album Releases Linked To Rise In Fatal Crashes

The release of a new album by Taylor Swift might be a cause for celebration among her fans, but such events have also been linked to a more sombre phenomenon: an increase in fatal car crashes. The team behind a new study say it sheds light on the impact of distracted driving. Writing in the journal Jama Network Open, [Vishal Patel, first author of the study based at Harvard Medical School] and colleagues report how they focused on the release of 10 major albums, launched between 2017 and 2022, selected for having the highest number of Spotify streams over a single day. […] The team found streaming volume for the top 200 songs in the US was 43% higher on the date of major album releases compared with the days surrounding the releases — although such data does not reveal whether the music was being streamed in a car.

[…] The researchers used data from a population-based registry of fatal US motor vehicle crashes to look at the number of traffic fatalities on the dates these albums were released, as well as for the 10 days either side. After taking into account the day of the week upon which the album was released, as well as federal holidays, and time of year, the researchers found the number of US traffic fatalities showed a relative increase of 15.1% on the date of major album releases, compared with similar days either side. “This is equivalent to approximately 182 fatalities in the US attributable to the release days of the 10 included albums,” the team writes.

Patel said the release of a new album could distract drivers because accessing music is a search task, not a single button press. “You unlock the phone, open the app, find the release, read down a tracklist, tap the right song. That’s several seconds of looking at a screen,” he said, adding unfamiliar music also demands more attention, while research has suggested listening to new, high-energy music measurably degrades driving performance. The researchers add the rise in traffic fatalities was greater among certain groups — such as younger drivers, male drivers, people who were driving alone, and people driving cars with a built-in infotainment platform. The authors say the results suggest that “online music streaming through smartphones may significantly contribute to distracted driving and traffic fatalities.”

But without decent public transportation or reliable eyes-off autonomous driving, we’re going to continue to waste money and human life on distracted driving.

While I would love to believe that getting the word out with public service announcements to improve the public’s general awareness of the risks of distracted driving, or actively reworking our training and licensing programs. The cynic in me knows in my bones that most people think they are above average drivers, and that people will feel that raising the requirements to get a license is somehow unfair.

Yeah, I’ve had this problem before, But I’m quick to blame Spotify’s UI because it sucks, when a new album releases, I do not care and the last thing I want to see when I’m driving is a pop up for it. (Yes, this has happened to me), I have a single playlist that I play all the time and if a song that’s playing that I don’t like or don’t feel in the mood for I skip it, using the physical buttons on my steering wheel, and not taking my eyes off the road, (not that Spotify’s Shuffle algorithm is any good, it’s absolute dog shit).

And before I leave, I always make sure it’s set to that playlist as I switch to alternative playlists when I’m doing other tasks, and it’s incredibly difficult to try and change playlists while driving, I learned my lesson a long time ago and I just pull over or mute the stereo entirely and sit in silence. (No, I’ve never had an accident before, but I don’t need to, to know that trying to navigate a touch screen while driving is a bad idea, even at very low speeds).

For some stupid reason as well the user interface is different per phone device, my partner hates it on a new whatever the fuck Samsung’s new flip phone is, because the seek bar is a wobbly groove for some stupid reason, and the album art is in the wrong spot and for some stupid reason they keep insisting on changing the interface because product managers have to justify their job....

I usually have it where if I’m driving with my partner, I get her to set the playlist, but she always puts her trash music on.

Google for some stupid reason also decided to give me Gemini so trying to set navigation through voice commands is an impossible task until I changed it back, it’s still not perfect but it’s better than arguing with a clanker.

The company is initially positioning Origin as a low-risk layer on top of GitHub, keeping GitHub as the "source of truth,” but the launch landed just as a major GitHub outage highlighted growing concerns about reliability in the age of AI-generated code. Cursor began rolling out Origin, its own code hosting platform, to paid users on Monday morning. Roughly three and a half hours later, GitHub’s status page lit up with what became a six-hour-and-forty-two-minute global degradation — error rates near 20% across pull requests, issues and the API, and near 50% on archive and raw file downloads, according to GitHub’s incident log. Enterprise single sign-on went down with it: SAML, OIDC, SCIM provisioning and Team Sync all failed. So did Copilot.

The developer internet did what the developer internet does. “You can now host your repos in Cursor Origin and deploy to Vercel via Cursor Origin which is itself hosted on Vercel,” Vercel chief executive Guillermo Rauch posted on X. “And unlike GitHub, it’s online [smile emoji]" Asked why he was smiling, Rauch replied: “trying to make light of the situation. We ourselves are stuck because of github rn!” Matt Palmer, who works at Cursor, quote-tweeted his own company’s launch with the day’s best line: “We were going to ship this earlier, but GitHub was down.” A GitHub outage, in other words, delayed the launch of a GitHub competitor.

Product launches get locked weeks in advance, and no evidence suggests Cursor timed this one. But the coincidence did the company an enormous favor, because it dramatized the argument Origin exists to make. For eighteen years, choosing where to host your team’s source code has been the least interesting decision an engineering organization makes. Cursor is betting that AI agents have made it interesting again — and for technical decision makers, that is the real news here. Not a new product, but a new procurement question with a governance problem attached.
